What I’ve Been Up To – February Edition

Amy and I received some money for Christmas and we’d been trying to figure out what to splurge on. One day I sent her an email asking, “Should we get a Wii?” I think you could have knocked her over with a feather she was so surprised. Needless to say, I’m not much into gaming and actually made her put her old-school Nintendo system out in the garage when we bought the house. But we got the Wii and so far I’m really enjoying our one game (the one that comes with it) with tennis, bowling, and baseball. In a few months we’ll probably splurge a little more and get the Wii Fit. I’ve heard such good things about it. Do you have any experience with it? Worth it?



We went to Cabo San Lucas, Baja, Mexico with my parents and Amy’s parents! It was wonderfully fun and although I wasn’t sick of winter before we left, I sure am now. You can see all my photos at Flickr. A few of my favorite memories:

  • eating my body weight in guacamole
  • snorkeling at Chileno Bay where we saw all sorts of amazing fish including a moon wrasse and several king angelfish
  • whale watching from our patio
  • four flat tires at the airport

Neil Gaiman. How have I never read anything by him other than his collaborative Good Omens (with Terry Pratchett) before? He’s an amazing storyteller. On vacation I read Anansi Boys and The Graveyard Book.

Other Stuff:

I’ve been doing lots of other stuff too (hockey, soccer, LWD – living with dogs, and working) and will probably write about some of those things at some point. I’ve also got a post brewing about useful software products for undergraduates (or other folks) who want to stop using so much paper. It involves things like Zotero and Evernote, but oh so much more…. Stay tuned!

  1. I’ve been mentally composing a post about living with dogs for about a month now, so I’ll have to bust it out, and then we can compare notes. And I’m very interested in paper-reducing applications. I’ll look forward to that post as well.

  2. we got the Fit a month-ish ago. love it! we’ve actually had Fit parties. 🙂 and i’m like you – no gaming skills at all. but this seems less like a video game system and more like something AWESOME. 🙂

  3. Yes, how have you never read Neil Gaiman?! He’s the best! You’ll love American Gods, too. And, Stardust! Have you read Stardust?! They made it into a movie (which was also enjoyable), but it was my first Gaiman book and I’ve been hooked ever since.

    I am not a big fan of his short stories, though. Some of them I think end in weird places, although the one in Fragile Things about the months…so awesome. It looks like you’ll have to read Fragile Things, too. 🙂

  4. I just bought the Wii and Wii Fit with my Christmas bonus from work. It is totally worth it! The fit is a lot of fun and is very interactive!!

  5. Brian and I got a Wii for Christmas so I bought a Wii Fit. It’s no replacement for the gym, but it’s fun and not as boring as going to the health club can sometimes be.

    I wouldn’t recommend the yoga to anyone who has no or very little experience. The “trainer” doesn’t explain the poses as explicitly as a live instructor can, nor can s/he correct your form or tell each individual class member what to work on specifically (keep your hips turned this way, keep your shoulder blades down, etc.). Well, neither can a yoga DVD.

    Some of the strength exercises are also yoga poses, and both can be tougher to do when your hands and/or feet are about 2 inches off the ground, as opposed to being on the floor. The Wii board is pebbled (?) for traction, so for anything that requires you to place your hands on it, it can hurt after a while.

    The overall objective is to perfect your center of balance. That’s not a bad thing, but most of the exercises encourage you to “keep the red dot within the yellow area,” but watching that spot and doing the exercise properly is tough. Unless, of course, your TV’s mounted on a wall. Even then, if it’s an exercise where you have to keep your head down, how’re you supposed to look at the screen?

    In groups or even in pairs, this can be a fun way to exercise, but if you’re serious about working out, this isn’t a replacement for the treadmill or weight machines. BUT, it’s much less boring.

    The nice thing is that you can test your BMI and your weight every day and it keeps track of your numbers — even plots it on a line graph! You can also add other activities you did, like if you played hockey for an hour. There are some nice incentives and encouragement tools used within the “game.”

    I use mine every day because it’s still tough for me to get out, but I know I’d have a better workout at the gym. Try before you buy!
